Godspower Akhigbe Igbadumeh

I am here today, humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our leaders past.

I thank Comr Sunday Rex Okoro for his service to our association, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Rex Sunday Okoro, outgoing 32nd lawsan president.

The 33rd Excos have now taken their oath of office.

The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, ever so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.

At these moments, Lawsan has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We have remained faithful and true to the ideals of our Association. So it has been.

Godspower Akhigbe Igbadumeh and Mr. Alabi the Sub-dean, faculty of law at his inauguration as 33rd lawsan president.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood.
Our faculty revered traditions, culture and value is badly weakened , a consequence of lack of will, power and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the faculty for a new age. Dress code has been lost; academic excellence both at faculty and at the law school level dwindled; environment poorly managed. Our facilities have failed.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, lawsanites — they will be met.

On the 6th of September, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our Association.

With hope and virtue, let us brave up once more , and endure what storms may come. Let it be said, by God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of ‘one accord’ and delivered it safely to future learned colleagues.

What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility — a recognition, on the part of every Lawsanites , that we have duties to ourselves, our faculty, and the University— duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.
This is the price and the promise of Lawsanites.

God bless you.

God bless LAWSAN.
